What is CBD? That’s a huge question with a lot of smaller questions attached to it such as:

  • Is it synthetic?
  • Can it get me high?
  • Where does it come from?

I’m going to try and answer some of those in this blog.

CBD Explained

To start, let’s discuss what CBD is in reality.

Well, it’s one of the many active compounds in cannabis. CBD (its technical name is cannabidiol) is a nonintoxicating compound in cannabis. In cannabis, CBD is responsible for anxiolytic, anti-convulsant, and anti-psychotic effects without intoxication. It functions by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, including serotonin receptors, and by modulating inflammation and oxidative stress at a cellular level.

Studies and clinical trials are exploring its potential uses for:

  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • chronic pains
  • Addiction
  • Certain forms of Epilepsy

There is actually one FDA-approved medication, which helps early forms of a specific pediatric epilepsy.

CBD Consumption

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about how to consume CBD. There are a few different ways to use and consume CBD with the most common form being by use of a tincture.

A tincture is an oil substance that can be added to drinks like coffee or tea. It can be put in food like brownies, muffins, or chocolate candy. Tinctures are often sold as individual bottles. These usually have a vast unregulated amount of CBD in them. The only way to buy or consume a proper amount is to ask professionals or a doctor.

Other forms of CBD, on the other hand, come in edibles like gummies. Edibles have specific dosages (measured in milligrams) of the substance. For example, most gummies have 15-30mg of CBD in them to better control the effects and quality that are desired.

Just a quick reminder. CBD and THC are often added together. It’s important to ask questions about the products you’re planning to buy before doing so, and certainly before consuming them.

A First-Hand Account

It’s one thing to talk about the technical details around CBD. It’s something completely different to discuss persona experiences with the substance.

I first used CBD in my late teen years. I was 18 when I purchased my first CBD pen. It was a weird purchase, I was misled about its effects and about what the expectations of its use might be. I assumed it would act like THC and give me the high “euphoria” like effect. When that failed to pan-out, I held some resentment toward the product. It left a bad taste in my mouth because it didn’t work as intended.

Looking back on it now, I laugh. I’ve learned a lot more about the product and how it works.
